Note: Children collected nuts for Christmas, and men hunted for game. Whole hogs were killed for barbecue. Husbands, wives, and children exchanged gifts. Some of Bessie's presents were placed at the foot of her bed in a box, and shoes and dresses were placed under the tree. The night before Christmas a program was given at her church. She found out there was no Santa Claus when she was a big girl. When she asked for a fancy doll and her mother told her she would have to buy her own, she realized that parents supplied the presents and not Santa. She didn't get the doll that time, but she did get other presents from her mother and does to this day.
