Note: When Bessie was 9 or 10, she had a fight with a girl who used to pick on her on her way to school. The girl was fat and had only one arm. She gave Bessie a hard time one day on top of a bridge. Bessie threw her into the water and taught the girl a lesson. The girl's father gave her a whooping as punishment for picking on Bessie. She never bothered Bessie again.
