Note: Alan Lomax asks how Bessie's grandparents dealt with white people. She recalls that her grandfather stayed at the same place in Dawson but different families owned the land. She tells a story about being picked on by white boys with her mother and her mother's friend as they were walking home together. Her mother made up a story that she had lost her key and that they needed to return to the crowded area from where they started. Eventually, the women returned with a group of male friends and the white boys left them alone.
