Note: Jones says she would not remarry because she doesn't trust men: "The Lord got some good folks in the world but I ain't going to try to take time out and go to hunt them." She would rather not be bothered with cooking and cleaning for a man, and prefers taking care of children. On the other hand, when she had a husband, proving to herself and others that she was up to the task was satisfying: it was her duty to "do food right and on time, clothes fixed right." 'I can fix up a house once a week and keep it that way. A man will drop a shirt on the floor and ask you to pick it up. If he wants to clean up he'll take the broom and you won't be able to find it.' Jones didn't go out much as a young woman. She talks about how much she enjoys 'walking up a storm' in New York City.
