Note: Alan Lomax tells Bessie Jones about the European custom of the droit du seigneur and asks if there was anything like that in the South. Bessie Jones says no, "that's horrible." Once, an older white man, Lebbert Maddox, repeatedly exposed himself to her when she was alone. Bessie told her mother. Her mother cursed Maddox and threatened to shoot him. She chased him at gunpoint miles to Jenner's store and Mr. Jenner also threatened him. He never bothered her again. The whole community helped, including whites. But, Bessie says, there were areas in the region where her mother would have been punished for protecting her daughter in such a way and their house blown up. Around Ray (a town) there were colored girls who went with white men.
