Note: People during slavery made a mocking song about the figure of the "pateroller" (patrolman). At this time, African Americans were not allowed to leave their plantations without a pass, and armed guards were hired to patrol the roads at night and enforce the pass system. Old Bill ' had 'big eyes and a double chin' like Mister Frog (also of song). Jones also talks about community socials and the games children played at these, and she introduces Railroad Bill.
