Note: An example of the spiritual trance music of the Hamadcha Sufi Tariqa (order), founded by Ali ibn Hamdoush in the 17th century. The Hamadcha practice a form of ecstatic dhikr (remembrance of God) which includes music, dance, and a trance ritual of possession. When the Hamadcha are 'possessed' -that is, spiritually charged with the energy of God's baraka (blessing) - they purportedly perform miraculous feats. Lomax describes the scene: "3 red hourglass drums [darbaka] carried on shoulders, 2 oboes [ghaita], hysterical dance. These people eat fire, cut their heads - and their chief then cures them with passing of hands."
