Note: In 1645, James Graham, fifth Earl and first Marquis of Montrose, allied himself with an Irish chief, Alexander McDonald (Alasdair Mac Colla Chiotaich MacDhòmhnaill), to put down a Covenanter (Presbyterian) rebellion, which they did with unparalleled ferocity. During this period an Irish captain marched into Fyvie and fell in love with a local maiden. She refused him and the captain later died (whether for love or in battle). Whatever the case, it was lucky that she did, for six months later Montrose's army was defeated at the battle of Philiphaugh, and over 100 captives, mostly women and camp followers, were taken to nearby Newark Castle and shot.
