Note: Tom Thomas recalls the old-time ministers at chapel: "I respect their memory, but they were dull." They stressed attendance at chapel every night and preached against folk songs and dances which were, as Thomas says, "in the Devil's country." Thomas is a senior deacon in his church now but says his grandfather wouldn't let him whistle on Sundays. Italians moved to Treorchy and opened shops on Sundays, which the natives couldn't imagine doing. He discusses the way religious customs have changed in Treorchy.
