Note: Child ballad No. 236. Alexander Irvine of Drum whose first wife had been Lady Mary Gordon, was reduced to poverty through support of the Stuart cause. Not long before he died in 1687, he married a second time to a shepherd's daughter, discomfitting his relations but pleasing the ballad makers.
