Note: Recordings were made on an Indian reservation near Lake Fagnano on the Laguna de los Pescados, Argentina, in the Spring of 1966. Lola Kiepja spoke Spanish, not well. Eight others, all men, spoke Spanish, were employed on Estancias. Nichior sings a shaman song. Lola's demeanor while singing is motionless, except for hand gestures representing spirits. Song to greet or hasten the coming of dawn from puberty rites. Spirits decended from the sky or came from earth. Were really men and boys wearing masks, their identity was the secret, concealed from the women, revealed to the boys. Women greet them with a song in unison. Women sing a song for a son being initiated. Each group of people was associated with one of the cardinal points (East, West, North, South) and with a tree and animal (such as a whale or guanaco). Women excluded, except for singing, and symbolically persecuted during rite.
