Note: Opens with a sample of Georgian choral music (U.S.S.R.). No adequate method until now for classifying and describing musics of the world. Cantometrics, devised by Alan Lomax and Victor Grauer, results in a historical and geographic mapping of human song style. Geographic regions: Old world of Empire stretches from Southern Spain, the Middle East, to the Orient. Features solo embellished singing. Cantometrics comprises a system of 37 performance scale ratings, such as from soft to loud, length of phrases, information load (text to nonsense syllable), structure of orchestration, degree of unison, heterophony, and so on. Training tapes make it possible for listener to apply the system to music that interests him or her. Test given at end of demonstration tape. Cantometrics yields social correlations with song styles and types of musical instruments. As a people live, so do they sing. Tape fades in and out.
