From the late 1930s through the 1950s, Alan Lomax wrote, produced, and hosted radio shows and series for the Office of War Information, CBS, the Mutual Broadcasting System, the BBC, and RAI Italy. Some of these programs featured performances (by, among others, Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, Josh White, Lily Mae Ledford, and Burl Ives) in front of studio audiences; others were surveys of regional folk music traditions or topical subjects using Lomax’s own field recordings and/or commercial 78-rpm records.
The recordings included here are not exhaustive, nor do they account for all extant transcriptions of Lomax’s radio work, but merely reflect those of which he kept copies in his personal archive. If (or as) more of these shows become digitally available, we will include them here.
