About the session: Blues and religious material performed by Fred McDowell, with occasional vocal accompaniment by his wife Annie Mae McDowell and friend James Shorty, and several pieces by guitarist-singer Rosa Lee Hill. (We have combined several days' worth of recordings at the McDowell home into this single session. (NB: Lomax and Collins gave these tapes shelf numbers after the fact, thus the inconsistency between them and the recording chronology. Adding to the dating confusion is that on the tape box of T887, Shirley identified the date as "September 22, Wednesday," but the 22nd was a Tuesday.)
