Note: Tom tells Lomax that he made one and four pence a week when he started at 12 in the mines. By 1896, when he got married, he was making 1 pound 18 – "19 and thruppence a week – but the table never went empty." He then tells a story about his mother's pea soup. Setting: The Miner's Club
