About the session: This session is comprised of dubs made by Alan Lomax during his time in the U.S.S.R. The Buryat, Balkar, Turkmen, and Kabardian material was copied from holdings at Radio Moscow; the original collector(s) are unknown. T1711R37–T1711R46 were copied by Alan Lomax in Tbilisi, Georgia; copies themselves from the sound archives of the Russian Institute of Literature in Leningrad. Tapes 1709–1711 contain Koryak and Ket material collected by Boris Mikhailovich Dobrovol'skii in the Chukotskiy District, U.S.S.R. c. 1956. There are also various samples copied from celluloid recordings from the Moscow Conservatory Collection. Some of these Chukchee and Samoyede recordings were collected under the auspices of the Moscow Conservatory from performers from Chukotsk National district, recorded in Leningrad, U.S.S.R. in 1939. Other Chukchee recordings in this session were collected by Edward Alexeev in Siberia, U.S.S.R., c. 1960.

T1713–1714 are Ostiak recordings from Moscow State Conservatory collected by Beryozov and Salekhard in Tumen' Region, U.S.S.R., 1952. T1715 is Bashkir material from Moscow State Conservatory collected at Bizhbulyak, Bashkir, A.S.S.R., U.S.S.R., 1958, and Tartar material from Moscow State Conservatory, collected at Kaibitskii district, Tartar, A.S.S.R., U.S.S.R., 1956, and Chuvash material from Moscow State Conservatory, collected at Chuvash, A.S.S.R., U.S.S.R., 1958.
